The Ask

The Morgue File project required the creation of a chronological archive documenting fashion trends and silhouettes focusing on the styles and societal influences of the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s. My task was to gather authentic images and write detailed captions to provide context and educate viewers about each decade's fashion.

Hollywood Dreams in Hard Times

Amid the Great Depression, fashion embodied resilience and escapism. Bias-cut gowns, flowing silhouettes, and satin high-neck dresses, inspired by Hollywood stars like Jean Harlow, brought glamour to everyday life. Blending practicality with aspiration, 1930s style symbolized grace and strength, offering a touch of cinematic allure against the odds.

War Paint: Beauty as a Bold Act of Defiance

Amid WWII’s challenges, makeup became a symbol of resilience and patriotism. Bold red lips and defined brows empowered women to maintain a sense of self and pride, even as rationing and restrictions influenced daily life. Beauty products served as morale boosters, embodying hope and strength in a time of uncertainty.
